What happens if I already have an email account and start using Exchange Email?
If you already have an existing email account (e.g., on cPanel, standard Gmail, or a generic provider) and start using Microsoft 365 Exchange Online, here’s what practically happens:
1. Your email can be migrated automatically
All your emails, contacts, and calendar events can be transferred from the old service to Microsoft Exchange. Utixo can handle a complete migration without data loss and, if needed, with no service interruption.
2. Professional email starts working immediately
Once your domain is configured (MX, autodiscover, SPF, DKIM, DMARC), all new emails will be delivered to the Exchange service. If MX records are not updated, messages will continue to go to the old mailbox.
3. Your email address stays the same
The transition is seamless for your contacts: your email address remains unchanged (e.g., name@yourdomain.com), only the backend platform changes to Exchange.
4. You can keep using your current devices
Exchange works across all major devices and platforms:
- Outlook for Windows and Mac
- iPhone and Android smartphones
- Professional webmail via Outlook.com
- Outlook Mobile App
- Other clients like Thunderbird (via IMAP, not recommended)
5. Advanced features beyond standard email
Exchange provides a superior level of functionality, including:
- Real-time (push) synchronization
- Shared calendars and contacts
- Enterprise-grade spam protection
- Automatic archiving
- Email versioning and recovery
- Full integration with Teams, SharePoint, Copilot, and other Microsoft 365 services
❗ If your old provider keeps receiving email
If you don’t update your domain’s MX records to Microsoft 365:
- Your old mailbox will continue to receive email
- Exchange will receive nothing
- You’ll be running two disconnected systems
This is why Utixo updates MX records only after the migration is fully completed, avoiding issues or downtime.
⚠️ Using both the old mailbox and Exchange
While technically possible via advanced setups like split-domain routing, running both services in parallel is not recommended. A full transition to Exchange ensures better consistency and reliability.
