What is DMARC and Why It Matters

DMARC stands for Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting & Conformance. It is an advanced email authentication protocol designed to reduce the risk of email spoofing, phishing, and domain abuse.

DMARC builds upon two widely adopted technologies:

  • SPF (Sender Policy Framework)
  • DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail)

How DMARC Works

With DMARC, domain owners can publish a DNS record that defines what to do when an email claiming to come from their domain:

  • fails SPF (IP address validation)
  • and/or fails DKIM (digital signature verification)

Based on the configured policy, the recipient mail server can:

  • deliver the message
  • quarantine it
  • or reject it entirely

Why Use DMARC

Implementing DMARC significantly enhances brand protection and customer trust by preventing unauthorized actors from sending fraudulent emails on your behalf.

It also enables diagnostic reporting, allowing domain owners to monitor email sources and detect anomalies.

Technical Requirement

For DMARC to work correctly, at least one of SPF or DKIM must be properly configured and validated on the domain.
