OWA Search Not Returning Results – Event ID 9842

Sometimes, the search feature in Outlook Web App (OWA) fails to return any results, regardless of the keywords used. This issue is often related to a malfunction in the Exchange search indexing service.

Upon checking the Event Viewer, you may find an error with Event ID 9842, which indicates a problem with the Exchange search engine.

 

How to Fix Event ID 9842 in OWA

To restore the search functionality, a simple restart of the related services is often sufficient.

Recommended procedure

  1. Restart the Microsoft Exchange Search Indexer service
  2. Restart the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service

After restarting, wait a few minutes and check if the OWA search functionality is working again.

 

Note

In some cases, a manual re-indexing of the databases might be required, especially if the issue persists after restarting the services.
