  • 2

The autocomplete feature in Outlook allows you to add a list of contacts all at once, making email management more efficient.

Importing contact lists based on your account type

The method to import contacts depends on the type of Outlook account you use:

  • Microsoft 365, Exchange Server, or IMAP: the list is stored in Outlook data files.
  • POP3: the autocomplete list is stored locally in an .NK2 file.

Exporting the autocomplete list

  1. 1. Close Outlook.
  2. 2. Download MFCMAPI from this link.
  3. 3. Run the mfcmapi.exe file.
  4. 4. Go to Session > Logon.
  5. 5. Select your Outlook profile and click OK.
  6. 6. Click on the mailbox name.
  7. 7. Expand Root Container > Top of Information Store or IPM_SUBTREE.
  8. 8. Right-click Inbox and select Open Associated Content Table.
  9. 9. In the new window, right-click IPM.Configuration.Autocomplete under the Subject column and select Export Message > Save message to file.
  10. 10. Choose MSG File and click OK.
  11. 11. Select the location and save the file.

Importing the autocomplete list

Close Outlook and all active Outlook Web App (OWA) sessions before proceeding.

  2. 2. Launch mfcmapi.exe.
  3. 3. Go to Session > Logon.
  4. 4. Select the profile and click OK.
  5. 5. Click on the mailbox.
  6. 6. Right-click Inbox > Open Associated Content Table.
  7. 7. Delete any existing autocomplete message to avoid duplicates.
  8. 8. From the Folder menu, select Import > From MSG.
  9. 9. Locate the saved .msg file.
  10. 10. In the Load MSG window, choose Load message into current folder and click OK.

Copying and importing an NK2 file

Step 1: Copy the autocomplete file

  1. 1. In the Windows search bar, type %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Outlook and press Enter.
  2. 2. Locate the NK2 file in the Outlook folder.
  3. 3. Copy the file to your new computer.

Step 2: Transfer and rename the NK2 file

  1. 1. Open the Control Panel > Mail.
  2. 2. Click on Show Profiles.
  3. 3. Note the profile name and rename the NK2 file accordingly.
  4. 4. Move the file to the Outlook configuration folder using %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Outlook.

Step 3: Import the NK2 file

  • Type outlook /importnk2 in the Windows search bar and press Enter.

The autocomplete list should now be imported successfully into the new profile.
