.it Domain Registration
Utixo is an accredited registrar for .it domains, with direct management through the Registro .it (NIC). Below are answers to common questions regarding the registration of Italian domains.
Who can register a .it domain?
An unlimited number of .it domains can be registered by any adult individual or organization with citizenship, residence, or a registered office in the European Economic Area (EEA), Vatican City, San Marino, or Switzerland.
Domain name requirements
- Allowed characters: letters (
a-z
), numbers (0-9
), and the dash (-
), as well as non-ASCII characters specified in the technical guidelines. - Cannot begin or end with a dash, nor start with the sequence
xn--
. - Length must be between 3 and 63 characters.
Reserved domains
Some names are restricted and cannot be freely registered, including:
- Names matching Italian regions, provinces, and municipalities (e.g.,
toscana.it
,pisa.it
). - Names related to network services or resources (e.g.,
www.it
,internet.it
,mail.it
). - Names corresponding to unsponsored gTLDs (.com, .net, .info, etc.), which can only be assigned as second-level domains by state authorities (e.g.,
gov.it
).
Names not matching the official designations of local entities (e.g., company.pisa.it
, firstname.lastname.viareggio.lu.it
) can be freely registered.
Geographic domains
A predefined geographic structure exists for Italian localities, covering:
- Regions (e.g.,
toscana.it
) - Provinces (e.g.,
pisa.it
) - Municipalities (e.g.,
viareggio.lucca.it
)
This structure allows for domain registrations with a geographic reference, such as prosciutto.parma.it
or firstname.lastname.viareggio.lu.it
.
Domains reserved for local authorities
Certain domains are reserved but can be assigned exclusively to local authorities. These include names matching the official designations of Italian regions, provinces, and municipalities, such as:
regionetoscana.it
,regione.toscana.it
provinciadipisa.it
,provincia.pisa.it
comune.pisa.it
,comune.viareggio.lucca.it
